The Dead Ones
"The Dead Ones"
a feature film shot on location in Baltimore, MD.
Director: Jeremy Kastian
DP: Chris Blauvelt.
While principal photography took place in Baltimore we took the helm managing and coordinating RED .R3d negatives between production and post - production. Along with DIT and content management onset we provided transcoded footage and dailies to post.
A few weeks before the first frame was recorded we worked with director of photography Chris Blauvelt and editor Maxx Gilmann to formulate a workflow. We wanted to help Chris with LUTs that would be useful a pre-visual on set for color reference, and for future referencing during the color grading process. After a day of shooting camera test under different lighting setups that would show us the latitude of color temperatures and color tones; we had put together a swatch of LUTs we could dial into the camera at anytime. Working in the REC709 color space we could quickly switch from the LUT to RAW for reference. The amount of time dialing LUTs into the camera on set would ultimately save days at the post house color grading with the colorist.
The transcoding Digital Cave provided for production was the most time saving cost efficient service we offered. The editor was able to cue up material in Final Cut that was synced and transcoded to ProRes SQ from Red .R3d without having to wait for compression time. We were able to adjust the LUTs and apply a "one light pass" to all the .R3d files.
